Why You Should Repair Your Domestic Appliances Instead of Replacing Them?
With the current cost of living a concern for many, upgrading a failing home appliance is not always a financially viable option. Fortunately, many faulty appliances can be restored with a simple repair. So, if you’re in need of a new appliance and thinking ‘new’ is the only option, then consider these 3 factors as to why repairing your appliance could be the better solution.
1. How Old Is The Appliance?
No appliance will last forever, and the more you use it, the shorter its general lifespan. But with care, many kitchen appliances last anywhere between 2-10 years. However, if you start noticing faults with your domestic appliance, and it’s not that old, then you may be unsure whether to ditch or repair - So consider the points below:
Repairs
Newer domestic appliances should not be malfunctioning regularly, so should they break, getting them repaired is usually the more cost-effective option over buying new, especially if they’re still under warranty. As a standard rule of thumb, if the cost of repairs is less than 50% of what a new appliance would be - we’d always recommend trying to repair, before buying new.
Replace
If you have an older machine however, it could be that the replacement parts you need are no longer available, and purchasing a new appliance may be your only option. If you do end up purchasing new, then follow the user instructions carefully so you can get the most out of your purchase and prevent premature damage - for example, descale your washing machine regularly and clear debris from your fridge so the air can circulate fully.
2. What’s Your Budget?
Repair
The cost of purchasing a larger domestic appliance, like an oven or washing machine, may mean that for many, repair is the only affordable option. Many replacement parts are fairly inexpensive in comparison to buying new, and although you may have to hire a specialist to fix the fault, this is often still the cheaper solution.
However, some faults may be easy enough to repair without the need to call out a qualified technician. If that’s the case then we have many items to help - such as bags, belts, bulbs, and cleaning materials. And if we do not hold what you need as a stock item, we will get this for you as soon as possible. However, if you’re struggling to fix an appliance independently, our expert repairs team is on hand to assist. Read more about our Spares & Repairs Services HERE.

Replace
If your machine is constantly requiring maintenance however, it could be more cost-effective to discard the old appliance for something new. After all, repairing an old appliance out of warranty may just end up costing you as much as upgrading.
Our domestic appliances come with a manufacturers' warranty, so you can have peace of mind knowing that you are covered should there be any manufacturer faults in the foreseeable future. However, If you’re concerned about the costs of a new kitchen appliance, then check out our price match promise as we guarantee not to be beaten on price!
3. The Environmental Impact - Repair Vs. Replace
Repairs.
Repairing is clearly the most eco-conscious option. It’s estimated that 2 million tonnes of household appliances end up in landfills each year in the UK alone. Opting to repair your machine rather than simply replace it, is a great way to help reduce your environmental impact.
Replace
However, despite all best efforts to repair, if parts have been discontinued or your appliance is too unsafe to risk trying to fix it, then replacing your machine is the best, and safest option. If you need to discard your old appliance then we can help uninstall and discard your old appliance via the WEEE directive recycling scheme. Via the scheme our team helps to remove and recycle over 1,000 kitchen products a day.
Many of our kitchen appliances are also fully recyclable - and stamped with a wheelie bin symbol so you can shop with sustainability in mind. Read more about our Environmentally Friendly Recycling Services HERE.
Furthermore, if you’re keen to make a more environmentally friendly choice, then knowing what energy-efficient options are available to you and within your budget is useful too. There’s strong evidence to suggest that upgrading your home with energy-efficient appliances can, in the long term, save you money on your household bills as well as helping to save the planet! So when purchasing new, make sure you check the energy efficiency of the appliance you're hoping to buy before you purchase.
